This was discovered during peat mining in the 1950s. Research excavations took place between 1957 and 1964. It is a sacrificial site of Germania libera, non-Roman Germania; around 80 sanctuaries were documented, dating from the early Iron Age (7th/6th century BC) to the early Middle Ages. The most recent ceramic finds prove that the site was used until the 10th century. Several settlements were located around the sanctuary.
