  • Formation of the Sacrificial Bog
The depression is a leaching depression of the Middle Muschelkalk, in which groundwater collected and a swamp and open water areas approximately 700 m × 200 m formed. The shallow lake silted up and became boggy. Based on the deposited sediments and peat, the beginning of silting up was determined to be 100 BC. The peat was extracted starting in 1947, thus enlarging the lake to its present size and shape. Prehistoric remains were also discovered during the peat extraction process. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)
