Old town of Ladenburg

A beautiful little town with Roman origins. The old town with its half-timbered houses, churches, and squares is worth seeing. Carl Benz lived and produced cars here. A beautiful museum about Mercedes and Benz is located on site, displaying many cars and the original production facilities. Absolutely worth a visit!

74 After what would later become Ladenburg was the Celtic capital of the region for 200 years, the Romans built several forts and settled Germanic peoples in the partially abandoned Celtic settlement.
98 Emperor Trajan elevated the settlement to a Civitas.
260 The Alemanni destroyed Lopodunum, which had meanwhile grown into an important city with temples, a market basilica and a theater.
370 Valentinian reconquered the area around Lopodunum on the right bank of the Rhine and secured it with the Burgus.
1006 After the Franks had maintained a royal court in "Lobdenburg" since the end of the 5th century, the rule passed to the Bishop of Worms.
13th century The city was expanded and now expanded again in the north into the area of the Roman city. The representative Martinstor with the sculpture of Saint Martin was created.
14th century. The division of the city between the Electorate of the Palatinate and the Diocese of Worms determined Ladenburg's fate for the next 300 years.
15th century. Numerous noble courts were built that still exist today, the Bishop's Court, and the second tower of the Gallus Church, which identifies it as a bishop's church.
16th century. The bishops left Protestant Worms in the direction of Ladenburg. Meanwhile, the Palatinate Elector Friedrich III had the Gallus Church, which was in use at the same time, occupied and all pictorial representations destroyed.
17th century. Despite repeated looting and conquests in the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Palatinate Succession, the city escaped largely unscathed. Numerous bullet holes in the Martinstor date from this time. 1705 After the Catholic Palatinate-Neuburg line came to power in the Electorate of the Palatinate, Bishop of Worms, Franz Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg, ceded Ladenburg to his brother, Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate. This ended Ladenburg's special status, and it finally fell into the shadow of Heidelberg and Mannheim.
1803 With the dissolution of the Diocese of Worms and the dissolution of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Ladenburg fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden.
1849 During the Imperial Constitutional Campaign, the Ladenburg railway bridge was held by revolutionary troops against overwhelming numbers of Prussian and Mecklenburg troops.
1903 Car inventor Karl Benz lived in Ladenburg until his death in 1929 and built a garage in the form of a medieval fortified tower.

Worthwhile way central through the old town. Great architecture to see and to find some delicious restaurants.
