Zelem's first church stood along the banks of the Zwart Water. The story that Saint Adelis, mother of Saint Trudo, is said to have been buried there in the year 647, is probably made up, but it does point to the age and importance of the church. It was demolished in the 17th century and the cult was transferred to the current village square, perhaps because the village center had also moved over the centuries.
