The term Kapermolen comes from an old mill that used to be on the Demer. In 1763 this mill is mentioned as follows: "In the Villstraet against the capermolen, a bampd, called Kapermolen, on the auden demer located and with a point on the corner of the Villstraet". The Kapermolen was built in the 16th century when the Broekermolen was converted into a fulling mill. When the latter was used as a grain mill again, the remote Kapermolen was no longer used. The then proud Kapermolen was demolished in the 18th century.

Hiking

The Kapermolenpark is a city park and also a green lung for the city of Hasselt. The park ends in the Japanese Garden. The park has a skate park, a playground, an event square, a pond, a Finnish track and a Celtic tree calendar. The Kaperconcerts take place on the event square every Thursday during the summer holidays. Each performance focuses on a specific genre with one or more artists per evening. In addition, various other events such as (summer) festivals and funfairs are organised in or around the Kapermolenpark.
