In 1861, the Danish parliament decided to build a railway between Fredericia and Flensburg. The construction was delayed in 1864 by the war, so that the line was only completed on November 1, 1866. By this time the border between Denmark and Germany had been moved a few kilometers south of Vamdrup, making it a Danish customs and border station, where both the Danish and German trains had terminal stations. So it was an important railway station with many officials, both railway staff and customs officials. And there were many tracks, some of which could be accommodated after reunification in 1920, when the Danish border station was moved to Pattburg.

The station is still on the route between Fredericia and Pattburg/Flensburg. There are daily connections to Hamburg from the train station.
