Vamdrup Church is built in Romanesque style and dates from the second half of the 12th century. It is larger than most village churches, which indicates a connection to Vamdrupgård Castle and that the area was already quite densely populated in the early Middle Ages.

The choir and apse of the church were demolished in 1797, and in 1919-20 the church was extensively rebuilt, adding a new choir to the east and a tower to the west. Between 1797 and 1919 there was a sacristy where the church had previously had a chancel. Before the church received a tower, the old burial mound to the west of the church served as a place for a suspended bell in a woodpile, hence the name of the burial mound (bell mound). The oldest bell in the church dates from 1435.
