Dr. Sprater Trail

A beautiful, steep path (up to the Kesselberg), which was newly laid out in 1953 and named after Dr. Friedrich Sprater - because of his services to the Palatinate Forest Association."Friedrich Sprater (1884 - 1952), a native of Neustadt, was a scientist (prehistorian) from the Palatinate. [...] Sprater studied classical archaeology in Munich. He was a conservator and later (1920-1949) director of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer. He was also a founding member of the Palatinate Society for the Promotion of Science. [...]
Sprater's role in the Nazi era is highly controversial and has been criticized [since the Nazi reappraisal in Speyer in 2022]. He was a member of the NSDAP and also worked under their racial-ideological aspects. In his doctorate (1907) he examined 'Race and Culture of the Late Stone Age in the Rhineland Palatinate'.
