The Great and Small Sand caves (about 195 m above sea level NH) [1] are a natural monument in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. They are located near Blankenburg in the Heers forest area northeast below the rain stone (289.4 m), on which the castle ruins Regenstein is located.

Looking from Regenstein towards Halberstadt, a white spot in the middle of the pine forest catches your eye. Here in the "Heers", in a forest clearing the size of a football field, there are mighty sandstone rocks in which caves have partially formed. In the middle of the area known locally as "Sandhutsche" is the Dedingstein.

The sandstone caves beneath Regenstein are well hidden and are therefore one of the insider tips in the Harz. Friends of the Harz hiking badge have chosen this place as the "Most beautiful stamping point of 2009".

The originality and power of nature are evident here. In prehistoric times, the Germanic tribes are said to have used this place as a meeting place. From the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century, pure white sand was mined here. At first glance, the sandstone rocks also resemble the chalk cliffs on Rügen.
