As the last major flood-backwater area in the Middle Elbe Valley, the lake outcrop with the lake Laascher but also from the botanical point of view is of great importance. Due to the regular floods no intensive agricultural use is possible. So plants could hold here, which are extinct elsewhere long ago.

These include species-rich wetland grasslands as well as, for example, the peculiar crab shear, a character of the trenches and old water. The relief-rich, partly sandy, partly loamy and partly overcast lowlands offer habitat for different plants in a confined space. Large areas of pink flowering fields of cuckoo flowers or yellow carpets of marsh marigold and buttercup cover the meadows. But there are also grasslands on Laascher See.

The NABU areas also include the adjacent old sea dyke, which houses a 500-year-old, highly protected plant community. In this dike live several sand bee colonies. At the same time it forms a flight path for birds and butterflies to other brownfields and serves as the surface network.

The Seege is a pretty, small, still quite natural river, it feeds the Gartower See and then flows on the other side of the Gartower See to the Laascher See and from there towards the Elbe, in which it then, near the The village of Vietze. The meadow landscape around the Seege is also very beautiful and you can watch many different species of birds here. Sometimes you can also go canoeing on the Seege, e.g. from Lake Laasch. The area is also very beautiful for cycling or hiking.
