"Charaon was created as the first major free work of art. The exploration of the theme of "Plowman and Death" blossomed here somewhat beyond the scope of the text. In the context of the theme of death, this vision of the ferryman to the underworld emerged. He has no skull-like face, he is not frightening, but very serious and dignified. Priestly in his appearance, he rather takes away the fear of the crossing. One does not doubt or despair of him. Almost benevolently, he takes us away, inexorably following the laws of eternity. I think everything will be alright on his chariot; the sickle is meant only for the body, not for us." Bernd Streiter, 1994

Bernd Streiter's sculpture "Charon" stands directly on the Elbe Cycle Path, on the Elbe dike in Mödlich. I like to take a break here when I'm cycling along the Elbe Cycle Path (which happens quite often).

This is Sharon, the ferryman who, in Norse mythology, brings the dead across the eternal river to the other shore.
