The Heumarkt is the second largest square in the old town and there is always something going on. 😊

When the swampy part of the former Roman port was filled up in the 13th century, large markets were built near the Rhine on the newly reclaimed area. The trading of goods here brought prosperity to many merchants and master craftsmen. It made sense that they would then build their dignified houses with romantic names and a variety of architecture around the square. Department stores, guild houses, inns and wine houses owned by well-known citizens and mayors can be found in the history of the Heumarkt.

The traveler Coryat visited Cologne in 1608 and wrote: "The Heumarkt is the most beautiful square I have seen on my trip, except St. Mark's Square in Venice. It is 280 steps long and 84 steps wide. This market square is wonderfully embellished by the many and stately building on its long and narrow sides."

The Heumarkt is the forerunner of the Cologne Goods Exchange. Flax and cloth, meat, cheese, salt, iron and coal as well as animal feed were traditionally traded here. The house numbers 79, 82, 83, 84 and 85 can no longer be found in 1822.
