The Lower Devonian is the oldest period of the Devonian, a section of the Paleozoic (Earth Age) around 400 million years ago.
The special thing about the rock at Laacher See is:

At this point, Lower Devonian rocks (middle Siegen layers) emerge as sandstones and siltstones. The beds are steep and the foliation surfaces slope to the northwest. This location is unusual because the foliation surfaces in this area are usually inclined to the southeast or are vertical, as in the Lower Devonian outcrop. Such an anomalous position is a sign that we are close to a large thrust zone. It is the Siegen Main Thrust, a large displacement zone that runs through the Rhenish Slate Mountains from Siegen to the area of Gillenfeld in the West Eifel. Due to the movements on this large fault surface, the rocks adjacent to it to the northwest have been rotated into this abnormal position.

Before you come out of the forest you should definitely see the rocks!
