The Laacher See is by far the most famous and largest lake in Germany with volcanic origin. Just a stone's throw to the west is almost 1,000 years old the abbey of Maria Laach, which is the home of Benedictine monks. At the lake and in the abbey there are several good possibilities to stop off. On weekends with nice weather, it can be a bit crowded around the lake.
