Until 1815, Kötzschen belonged to the Merseburg high school Merseburg, which had been under Electoral Saxon sovereignty since 1561 and belonged to the Secondogenitur Principality of Saxony-Merseburg between 1656/57 and 1738. [1] Through the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna, the place came to Prussia in 1815 and in 1816 was assigned to the Merseburg district [2] in the Merseburg administrative district of the province of Saxony. The Kötzschen parish church was built around 1710/20, probably based on plans by Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt. The parish church of Kötzschen is therefore also popularly known as the Hoppenhauptkirche. The church is characterized by a high, square north tower, which merges into an octagon. The nave is designed as a rectangular hall. A pulpit altar by Christian Trothe, a lectern with a baptismal font by Johann Heinrich Agner and a side organ gallery (organ 1738 by Johann David Tintzsch) are outstanding interior decorations from the time the church was built.

The Baroque village church Kötzschen was built around 1710-23, probably according to plans by Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt, but he may have been started by his father Michael Hoppenhaupt. In the vernacular, therefore, the parish church Kötzschen is also referred to as '' Hoppenhauptkirche ''.
