House Rosenau on the Werdener Pastoratsberg

The picturesque property captivates with its colorful and beautifully shaped portal, for example the delicate pillars of the small side towers are depicted as mythical creatures, half human, half pangolin; next to it, the glowing blue of the curved lattice tips dominates.

“The lives of the elderly residents of Haus Rosenau am Pastoratsberg also came to a tragic end. Initially intended as a convalescent home because of its beautiful location and good air, it was founded in 1914 by the Düsseldorf couple Otto Fleck and Käthe Fleck, née Brasch. it changed over the years to a sick and old people's home. The home was managed jointly by the Jewish communities in Düsseldorf and Essen. Käthe Fleck was head of the facility until 1938. In November 1938, the Gestapo and the SS chased the residents into three "Jewish houses" on Bungertstrasse, from where they were deported to extermination camps shortly before the end of the war. Käthe Fleck died in London a few years after the war. Haus Rosenau became a women's convalescent home for the Nazis, after the war it was again a Jewish retirement home until the 1960s, and is now privately owned.
