The game reserve in the Heissiwald is a popular excursion destination all year round. Here you can see wild boars, mouflons, red deer and fallow deer up close. If you would like to get to know the forest and its many tree species better, go on the forest nature trail.

The Heissiwald game gate has existed since 1964. Initially there were 6 animals from the fallow deer group. In 1982, the game reserve survived an upcoming closure thanks to a generous donation from Stadtsparkasse Essen, which also acquired four Eurasian wild sheep (moufflons).
Today, 6-8 red deer and 6-8 fallow deer with calves live in the 6-hectare area. 6 wild boar (wild boar) with approx. 6-15 piglets per year as well as 6 – 9 mouflon (wild sheep) with their lambs. The game reserve is one of the most beautiful and popular recreational facilities in our city and is visited by around 40,000 people every year.
