The Lettenbachsee used to be the pit of a brickworks where clay (Letten) was mined.
June 15, 2025
Would you have thought that the idyllic Lettenbachsee only exists because of bricks? The name says it all: Here there are Letten, which colloquially means clay and thus the raw material for brick production. The clay in the pit was 20 meters thick. That was enough for millions of bricks. The Bechert brickworks had been producing high-quality bricks for decades. The Lettenbach had to deliver around 100 bathtubs full of water every day. When operations ceased in 1968, the creek filled the deep clay pit with its water — Hof got a lake, which is now a popular local recreation area. The lake is a stopping point of the geopath with a geological information board.
