The sculpture made of Fichtelgebirge granite was created by the Upper Palatinate artist Wolfgang Stefan from Selb in 1996. It is a gift from the Hof e. V. and a replica. Because it replaces an older lion sculpture made of fine-grained sandstone by the sculptor Adolph Weiß. Erected on April 1, 1884, it withstood wind and weather for over 80 years until vandals vandalized it in 1960. But that's not all - Weiß'sche lion, in turn, replaced the actual "Ur-lion", which the city building officer Thomas had erected in 1875 as the heraldic animal of the Wittelsbach family and the Kingdom of Bavaria. The Fuchs & Sonntag sculptors made this first lion. However, it did not withstand the effects of the weather for long. Who cares? He was made of plaster!
