This mural was created by Croatian artist Jadranka Lacković. The artist, interested in the diverse elements of the sea, chose to depict herring. Why herring? The artist tells us more: "Herring is one of the blue fish and is related to 'our' sardines. We call the sardine the 'Queen of the Adriatic' because this fish has nourished the people of the coast for centuries. Croatians have a very emotional bond with the sea and everything that lives in it. Fish is an indispensable part of our culture and something that truly connects us. Those who live by the sea live for the sea, and during these two days working on the painting, I noticed how Belgians react in the same emotional way. I learned about the old fish market and the famous fish restaurants in the area. I also use fish as a symbol of freedom. Fish know no boundaries. They swim freely. Over the past year, we have been confronted with strict measures, isolation, and restrictions on our freedom of movement. Bozko's mural—an isolated man in his contemplation—reminded me strongly of this. (Perhaps I am that person who looks at the sea and envies the fish for their freedom.) The aspect of freedom This is also reflected in the way I applied this mural directly to the wall. We chose the colors and motifs with the neighbors, but then I drew it freehand, from my mind, using the lines and natural shapes in the brick wall.
