    A lot changed with the arrival of the Dukes of Brabant. An earlier 11th century fortress on the Coudenberg was converted into a real castle by Duke John III (ca. 1300-1355). The adjacent hunting area, later Warande Park, increased in importance as a result. The hunting grounds were further expanded in the fifteenth century under the Burgundian duke Philip the Good (1396-1467) and later by Emperor Charles (1500-1558). In the following years, De Warande became a real pleasure resort for them and the court nobility.
    In 1776, under the impulse of Empress Maria-Theresa (1717-1780), it was decided to turn the former ducal hunting grounds into a park. The government would be responsible for the replanting and hand over a third of the land to the city of Brussels. In return, the city had to level the terrain and build enclosing streets. The Austrian Joachim Zinner (1742-1814) and the French architect Barnabe Guimard (1731-1805) were called upon to design the future park.
