A lot changed with the arrival of the Dukes of Brabant. An earlier 11th century fortress on the Coudenberg was converted into a real castle by Duke John III (ca. 1300-1355). The adjacent hunting area, later Warande Park, increased in importance as a result. The hunting grounds were further expanded in the fifteenth century under the Burgundian duke Philip the Good (1396-1467) and later by Emperor Charles (1500-1558). In the following years, De Warande became a real pleasure resort for them and the court nobility.
In 1776, under the impulse of Empress Maria-Theresa (1717-1780), it was decided to turn the former ducal hunting grounds into a park. The government would be responsible for the replanting and hand over a third of the land to the city of Brussels. In return, the city had to level the terrain and build enclosing streets. The Austrian Joachim Zinner (1742-1814) and the French architect Barnabe Guimard (1731-1805) were called upon to design the future park.

Fun thing is to try and run all paths in the park during one session. Not always only the outer ring which everyone runs
