The construction of the present hospital was originally used as a Catholic orphanage. In 1854, two nuns from the Netherlands came to Mönchengladbach to devote themselves to the care of the sick and the care of the Catholic orphanage. Within 2 years the hospital Maria Hilf was built.

In 1908, the Franciscans founded the first special hospital for people with tuberculosis in Germany. The number of patients in the hospital Maria Hilf and in the "Sanatorium St. Francis" grew significantly.

About 50 years later, the sanatorium was transformed into a general hospital. 1973 followed the signature of the shareholder agreement between the Franciscans of Lüdinghausen and the city Mönchengladbach, with the majority of the capital contributions remained with the sisters.

The last nun was active in 1992 in the nursing service. However, to preserve the Catholic character, the nuns founded the St. Francis Foundation.

The sanatorium, which is today distributed in 3 locations, was renamed "Klinikum Maria Hilf GmbH Mönchengladbach".

The building was built in 1854 and was used as a hospital until 2018.

Relocated to Viersener Straße as part of the merger with St. Franziskus Hospital.

High-quality residential buildings are now being built here.
