After the city plan of the city Mönchengladbach was adopted in 1863, the development of the area called Gründerzeitviertel was started. At his expense and largely on his land, the entrepreneur Franz Niessen built the current Schillerstraße. This was in 1875 therefore given the name Franzstraße. In 1899, his descendants sold the property Margarethenstraße 44 to the city, so that a place could be created there. In addition, there were four other properties that the city also acquired by various owners in 1899.
