The story about the cunning fox Reynaert is a satirical animal story, in which medieval society is held up to a mirror. It is one of the earliest works written in the vernacular. In the story, places in the vicinity of Hulst are recognizable. The city therefore calls itself the Reynaert city.

The animal epic Van den Vos Reynaerde is about the struggle of good against evil. The protagonists are animal characters, the most important being the fox who denounces the self-interest, vanity, greed and jealousy of the other animals. The fox itself is the greatest villain and wields the power of the word. In the ancient story, written in the 13th century by Willem die Madocke maecte , names of villages and regions occur in the land of Hulst and the adjacent land of Waas (Belgium).
This Reynaert monument, unveiled in 1938, was made by Anton Damen. It depicts "De Hofdag", a scene from the animal fable "Van den Vos Reynaerde", which was written in the thirteenth century and is still a source of inspiration for linguists, writers and artists.

Hard stone relief and statue, together depicting a court scene from the animal story Reynaert de Vos:
A Reynaert de Vos stands in pilgrim's clothing before the court of King Nobel the Lion, which is depicted in relief. In the court are depicted Belijn the ram, Cantecleer the rooster, Cuwaert the hare, Tibeert the tomcat, Bruun the bear and Isegrim the wolf. On the right is Tiecelijn the raven on the gallows and on the left in the background see the towers of Hulst.

On the side a stone plaque with (unreadable) text.

It was unveiled on September 12, 1938 and first stood on the Houtmarkt. It was moved to the Gentse Poort in 1949.
