The European Commission is based in the modern Berlaymont building on Schumannplein. Until then, a girls' school called 'les Dames du Berlaymont' stood on that site, hence the name. The design was a joint project by architect Lucien de Vestel, Jean Gilson, Jean and André Polak. It made headlines in the early 1990s because of the asbestos pollution and the sky-high costs of removing it. The building has only been in use again since 2004. It accommodates over 3,000 employees of the European Commission. Visits are for groups only, request 2 months in advance.
