Bike Touring Highlight
The early simply fortified Molendamm between settlements located on sand dome Berlin and Cölln replaced the ford, which served to overcome in this narrow glacial valley of the Spree. Thus, around 1200, the river crossing between the settlements of Berlin and Cölln improved and from this developed the intersection of major trade routes for the north-south trade. The first primitive Molendamm initially consisted of a trunks reinforced with tree trunks, whose gaps were traversed by the Spree.
The Mühlendammschleuse was built in 1894 as a replacement for the city lock located in the side arm of the Spree as a single-chamber lock. This was the Schiffbarmachung the previously blocked by mills main arm of the Spree. It was rebuilt in 1936 as a two-chamber lock. The lock was put into operation in 1942 and overcomes a drop of 1.51 meters.
