These two remains - the oldest that can be admired in Dole - belong to the first bridge that connected the town to the road leading south into Switzerland and Italy. The approx. 500 m long bridge, built of stone since 1274, had a toll station and led on the city side to today's Place du Prélot, above the Great Fountain. In the 17th century, the structure, interrupted by the course of the fortifications, is diverted by a path that goes around the military bastion. It is frequently damaged by flooding and rebuilt, finally collapsing shortly after 1762 when a new stone bridge is built downstream from the old one.
