The name Peer was first mentioned in the Liber Aureus, in which a document from 725 may have been copied, in which Saint Willibrord draws up his will. Peer appears in it as Pedero. Later spellings are Pirgus (1135) and Pyra (1178). This comes from pirgus (meaning paved road). Other sources indicate that the name comes from Perre or Parre, which means "fenced place".
