There was a windmill in this hamlet since 1659, but it was destroyed by fire on March 20, 1886. They bought a mill which was located in Hainaut, not far from the French border. It is not exactly known in which village this mill stood. The mill dates from the early 18th century.

The name Stermolen owes the mill to the wind rose painted on the mill house, which was applied at the beginning of the 20th century. The name came into use only after 1960.

In 1901 this mill was purchased and transferred to Eksel by rail. It was established not far from the former mill. One rod was removed in 1954, after which the mill continued to operate with a single rod until 1970. Finally, fodder was ground and some buckwheat, which was sold in 1 kg portions. In 1970 the miller retired and the mill was bought by mill builder Adriaens from Weert, who wanted to transfer it to Asten to replace the De Oostenwind post mill, which burned down in the same year.

The Ekselnaren defended this, in 1973 the mill was protected and in 1977 it was purchased by the municipality. From 1983-1984 the mill was restored. In 2010, an educational exhibition was set up in the mill house, where children were made familiar with windmills and the miller's trade.

The mill is a post mill of the Walloon Hainaut type. This is characterized by a high mill house, a heavy construction and the cover by a bent saddle roof.
