The Breitstrom arises just behind the Long Bridge in the center of Erfurt from the confluence of the Bergstrom and Walkstrom. The broad stream flows past the New Mill, under the Castle Bridge, under the Rathausbrücke, under the Krämerbrücke and under the Lehmannsbrücke. It also branches into a few separate arms, but they all run close together. In Venice in the north of the old town, the branch of the river known as Wilde Gera, coming from the east, used to flow into the Breitstrom, from which the Gera arises again. However, the Wilde Gera has been filled in since 1898. North of Erfurt's old town, the river is again referred to as the Gera.
