A 70-step outside staircase leads from Domplatz to Domberg. The cathedral with its highly Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the 724 religious building in Rome. He was the main church of the bishopric of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface. In the middle tower is the world's largest medieval free-swinging bell, the Gloriosa.

Dominating the cathedral square, the monumental assembly of the cathedral and St. Severikirche is one of the most formidable architectural alterations of the Middle Ages on German soil. Centuries formed at the present shape of the cathedral.
The Erfurt Cathedral is the landmark of the state capital of Erfurt. Together with the church of St. Severi, it forms a unique backdrop and a visual end to the cathedral square, one of the largest market places in Europe. In the cathedral is the bell "Gloriosa" - with its height of 2.62 m and its diameter of about 2.5 m, it is the largest, free-swinging medieval bell in the world.
