A 70-step outside staircase leads from Domplatz to Domberg. The cathedral with its highly Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the 724 religious building in Rome. He was the main church of the bishopric of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface. In the middle tower is the world's largest medieval free-swinging bell, the Gloriosa.

The Erfurt Cathedral (formerly also known as Marienkirche or Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis) is the most important and oldest church in Erfurt. He is 81.26 m high and owns the Gloriosa the largest free-swinging medieval bell in the world. The cathedral served only a short time in the middle of the 8th century as a bishopric and was the entire Middle Ages until into the early 19th century seat of the collegiate St. Marien. Since 1994 he is again cathedral of the newly created diocese of Erfurt and seat of the cathedral chapter (Wikipedia).

The cathedral square in Erfurt is a large marketplace with about 3.5 hectares, with intact or restored edge buildings. Once it was the main market square and court square. On the square are the Minervabrunnen (1784) and built in 1777 in honor of the Elector of Mainz Erthal Obelisk (Wikipedia).

Who likes medieval city flair, is right in Erfurt. Tip: Walk from the cathedral square towards Fischmarkt. Continue over the Krämerbrücke. It spans the Gera, fully built with small shops. Absolutely enjoy the chocolate factory there!

The cathedral square is the tourist magnet next to the Krämer bridge and everyone should count the steps up and then the magnificent view from both !! Enjoy the sides of the Domberg. The descent into the crypt is recommended, even to attend the service in the crypt is an experience of a special kind

Dominating the cathedral square, the monumental assembly of the cathedral and St. Severikirche is one of the most formidable architectural alterations of the Middle Ages on German soil. Centuries formed at the present shape of the cathedral.
The Erfurt Cathedral is the landmark of the state capital of Erfurt. Together with the church of St. Severi, it forms a unique backdrop and a visual end to the cathedral square, one of the largest market places in Europe. In the cathedral is the bell "Gloriosa" - with its height of 2.62 m and its diameter of about 2.5 m, it is the largest, free-swinging medieval bell in the world.

It will not take long and the old picture of the Virgin Mary in mosaic will be restored to the west wing in the direction of Stiftsgasse - there is a sad story about this mosaic - but I will not tell you everything

In summer, the Domstufen-Festval runs. Schedule a visit. Unfortunately, the view of the cathedral is somewhat limited.

Probably one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in central Germany. Especially because of its location on the Domberg overlooking the backdrop of the cathedral square at his feet.
