Originally only the square in front of the west side of the town hall was named that way.
The place is called the fish market because, among other things, fish was traded there. Since the time it became a city, the fish market, as the historical center of the city of Erfurt, has served central functions and was the intersection of the trade routes leading through Erfurt.
It was not only a market and trading place, but also the center of public life. This will also have prompted the residents to build the citizens' department store here, which later became the first town hall.
The old building was mentioned as early as 1275 as curie consulum Erfordensis civitatis. To the south, the square was closed by St. Martin's Church, which was moved from here to the Langenstegen (castle bridge) in 1385 because it had no churchyard.
