    The Roman, Fish Market, Erfurt
Roland or Roman? - The statue at the Fish Market will be rebuilt today and immediately covered up
It had disappeared from the cityscape for almost exactly a year - this morning the Roman statue at the Fish Market will be rebuilt. During the extensive construction work last year, the standing figure had to be dismantled and stored along with the stele and base for safety reasons. Cracks in the pedestal suggested that the stability of the figure was at risk.
Since then, the architectural work of art has been stored at the Erfurt company Nüthen Restorations. In recent months, the company has carried out conservation and stone-replenishing measures on the pedestal and capital. The base, the remains of which can still be seen at the Fish Market, also had to be completely replaced.
"Roman" or "Roland"? This question is often answered with a shrug of the shoulders, even among the people of Erfurt. From 1448 onwards there was a figure of St. Martin on the fish market, which was connected to the St. Martin's Church. Its remains were archaeologically proven during the construction work. St. Martin is the patron of the city of Mainz and the Mainz diocese, which also formally exercised city rule over Erfurt. The statue was torn down in 1525 during an uprising against the Electorate of Mainz at the instigation of the Erfurt Council. In 1591 the Archbishop of the Electorate of Mainz urged the erection of a new figure of St. Martin. The Dutch sculptor Israel von Milla, who lived in the city, was commissioned to create it. The Roman is a statue in the shape of a Roman warrior on the fish market in Erfurt, directly opposite the Erfurt town hall. The statue is a Roman warrior armed from head to toe with the insignia of the Roman Republic, holding the city flag of Erfurt in his right hand.

Basically, this is Saint Martin, the patron saint of the city of Mainz, who was supposed to remind the people of Erfurt of the supremacy of the Archbishop of Mainz. After all, the current capital of Thuringia belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz from 755 and remained under this rule for about a thousand years. So is the "false Roland" not a symbol of freedom, but a foreign emblem of sovereignty? Not a Frank, but a Roman? Or maybe a bit of both? After all, both models seem to have merged over time in the Erfurt Roman figure.
