Already in the Merian topographies of the 16th century, a ship's crane in Oberwesel is recorded. The large wooden treadwheel under the shingled roof, mounted on a stone base, drove the load chain via the inclined boom arm – people ran in the wheel to lift goods from the ship, similar to the preserved treadwheel cranes in Bingen, Oestrich-Winkel and Andernach.
