The moated castle is the remaining gatehouse of the old Renaissance moated castle right next to the new castle. Built in 1564 by Hans Ulrich von Nostitz, the “old castle” was largely demolished around 1780 and the remains used to build the new castle. The moated castle is now privately owned and has been lovingly restored. On Open Monument Day, the owners occasionally allow visitors to take a look inside.

From the Großschönau border crossing you can enjoy a very varied ride along the Mandau to the edge of Hainewalde on partly quiet roads or cycle paths through a variety of half-timbered houses.
The highlight is of course the castle complex
