"Circle of Life - Life defeats death"

With the inauguration on October 11, 2012, the idea of upgrading Halle's cathedral square with a fountain finally became a reality after more than 20 years. The fountain consecration took place under the umbrella of the generation project Halle Action Days "Alter:native 2012". The fountain "Circle of Life - Life defeats death" on the cathedral square fits into the context of active aging and solidarity between the generations.

The commission to create a fountain design for the cathedral square went to the Halle sculptor Horst Brühmann back in 1986. He took on this special task and designed a fountain complex consisting of a fountain architecture that refers to the cathedral and a figure program. This includes a central group of figures (mother with child and falling death) and the circle of life. This in turn shows four figures facing the viewer (one young/old woman and one young/old man).

Background information on the history of the fountain:
In 1991, the fountain design was approved by a working group from the city administration and the Association of Visual Artists in Saxony-Anhalt. This basically cleared the way for its implementation. However, a lack of finances and concerns from monument conservationists meant that this project was put on hold for a long time. The sculptor's constant work on the figures helped to allay these concerns. The commitment and mediation of Halle's former mayor, Dagmar Szabados, paved the way for the realization of this fountain design. Saalesparkasse, Stadtwerke and Hallesche Wohnungsgesellschaft financed the construction. Further support came from Martha-Maria Krankenhaus gGmbH, Bildgießerei Richard Barth GbR, Dr. Helmut Stelzer and Thomas Zaglmaier, architects and gallery owners, and the Lions Förderverein Halle Saalkreis.

The "Circle of Life", also known as the "Brühmann Fountain" (named after its creator Horst Brühmann) stands in the forecourt of Halle Cathedral. It was designed and built in 1986, handed over to the city in 1991, but was not initially displayed publicly. It was only fully restored in 2012 and found its place on the cathedral square.

It depicts five life-sized figures that symbolize the circle of life. In the middle is a woman with her child, conveying the message "Life conquers death". The fountain was built from sandstone, the figures are made of bronze.

"Becoming and passing away" - A mother with a child in her arms stands closely intertwined with a skeleton figure of death, which falls headfirst downwards, which is helped along by a subtle kick from the mother.
