Don Juan de Austria - Monument, Regensburg
Since 1978, Zieroldsplatz has been the backdrop for a monument that was erected to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Don Juan d'Austria (1547-1578). His mother was Barbara Blomberg from Regensburg, his father was Emperor Charles V. Don Juan won a decisive battle with the so-called "Holy League", a large fleet of ships equipped by Spain, Venice and the Papal States, against the then sea-robbing Turkish naval power. The original of his statue stands in the Sicilian port city of Messina, where the operation was launched. Johann Vielberth gave the copy to the city of Regensburg as a gift.

After the Battle of Lepanto, Andrea Calamech created a bronze statue of Juan, which was erected in Messina in 1572. In his hometown of Regensburg, a copy of this statue has been commemorating Don Juan de Austria since 1978 on Zieroldsplatz east of the town hall.

The Spanish Navy named an unprotected Velasco-class cruiser after Juan de Austria. The Don Juan de Austria was launched in 1887 and was lost to a US Navy squadron in the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Salvaged and repaired after the battle, it served as the gunboat USS Don Juan de Austria in the US Navy from 1900 to 1919.[7]

To this day, a tercio (regiment) of the Legión Española is named after him. It is the Tercio "Don Juan de Austria", 3° de la Legion, stationed in the small town of Viator in the province of Almería, where the majority of the units of the Spanish Legion are stationed and where their headquarters are located.

In 1946, a Spanish sailing ship was to be named after Don Juan de Austria, and was laid down under this name, but upon completion in 1952, it was delivered to Chile as Esmeralda because Spain was in arrears with payments for saltpeter. The Esmeralda now serves as a sailing training ship.

A copy of the monument to Juan de Austria in Messina, Sicily, has stood here since 1978. The (illegitimate) son of Emperor Charles V and Barbara Blomberg was born in Regensburg in 1547. Raised and educated in Spain, he was commander of the Spanish Mediterranean fleet from 1568. Commander of the Holy League fleet, he credited with winning the 1571 naval battle of Lepanto against the expanding Ottoman Empire. In 1576 he took over the office of Spanish governor in the Netherlands. That was at the time when the Netherlands was fighting for independence from Spain (Eighty Years' War). In 1578 he died in Bouge near Namur (in present-day Wallonia in Belgium).

Don Juan de Austria, Knight John of Austria, was born on February 24, 1547 in Regensburg. As extramarital son of Emperor Charles V and the Regensburger citizen's daughter Barbara Blomberg, he was not only commander of the Spanish fleet, but also governor of the Habsburg Netherlands.

Don Juan de Austria grew up without the knowledge of his actual family roots. On his father's secret orders, he was brought to Spain in 1550 and raised by foster parents. Although Emperor Charles V recognized Don Juan as a biological child in the will, he did not reveal himself to him until his death. His Spanish heir to the throne, his son King Philip II, introduced after the death of the abdicated emperor his half-brother in 1559 as Don Juan de Austria at court, as Charles V had written it down in the will.

In 1568, King Philip II appointed Don Juan Commander of the Spanish Mediterranean Fleet. From 1569 to 1571 Juan de Austria led the fight against the rebellious Moors in the Andalusian Alpuiarras. On the orders of Pope Pius V Don Juan de Austria was appointed in 1571 as captain general of the seas to the Commander in Chief of the Fleet. In this role, he also won his biggest victory against the Muslims, in the sea victory of Lepanto.

Due to the many years of failures in Oranien and some assassinations on his life conditionally, Don Juan was in 1577 seriously ill. The confidence of his brother, King Philip II, he had lost by his excessive ambition. He died in the Bouge camp after the plague broke out there.

Don Juan was buried in the tomb of the Spanish kings in the El Excorial, although his half-brother King Philip II would have liked to take him to Spain. In Regensburg, his birthplace, since 1978 a monument on the Zieroldsplatz in memory of Don Juan de Austria.

Don Juan is slightly hidden from the crossing of the Rathausplatz to an alley that goes down to the Danube.

Yes, a visit is worthwhile, especially since you can get past the monument from the old town hall to the Danube in the direction of Wurstkuchl.

A beautiful statue of “Don Juan de Austria”. Unfortunately, the statue has not been installed in one of the popular places in Regensburg.
