    Old town hall in Regensburg
The Old Town Hall was built when the legendary Staufer Emperor Friedrich II made Regensburg a Free Imperial City in 1245. The oldest part is the 55 meter high tower. After a fire around 1360, the Reichstag Hall, which was originally intended as a dance hall, was added. This building can be easily recognized from the outside thanks to its two-story bay window.
The building had its heyday from 1663, when the Perpetual Reichstag was held exclusively in Regensburg in the Old Town Hall. The Reichstag was dissolved in 1806 and is considered the forerunner of the German parliaments, the European Union and even the UN. To this day, visitors can really feel the history in the building. Many details from that time have been preserved, be it carvings in the window glass by once aristocratic graffiti artists, through to a clock that does not have a minute hand, which corresponded to the understanding of time at the time.
A special feature has also been preserved in the basement of the Old Town Hall. Original torture tools can still be seen in the old vault. Anyone who has seen these tools will certainly be relieved by our current jurisprudence. This building is a living testimony to European history and should not be forgotten on any tour of the city.

The medieval Old Town Hall of Regensburg at the Town Hall Square with the extension built on the Zieroldsplatz in the Baroque period is the seat of the Lord Mayor and a small part of the city administration of Regensburg. Today, the Old Town Hall also houses a museum on the history of the Regensburg Reichstag. Large parts of the city administration with the Bürgerbüro are located in the new town hall on Dachauplatz.
