The church of St. Emmeram, begun around 780, was the main church of the monastery of St. Emmeram, which was elevated to the rank of abbess in 1731. After the secularization, the abbey church became the parish church of the city of Regensburg and by Pope Paul VI. on March 5, 1964 with the Apostolic Exhortation Terra sacra raised to the Basilica minor.
