Victory Monument, Europaplatz, Freiburg im Breisgau
Fundraising campaign in the excitement of victory: After winning the war against the French in 1871, the people of Baden from Karlsruhe to Lörrach collected donations to create a monument to their victory
In a public competition for which 18 artists applied, the sculptor Karl Freidrich Moest was awarded the contract. He created the Victory Monument, inaugurated in 1876, from French gun barrels. On the pedestal, which tapers towards the top and is decorated with inscriptions and images of war heroes, there is of course Victoria, the goddess of victory, who proudly holds a laurel wreath into the air.
In 1940, the monument was supposed to be a birthday present for Adolf Hitler, but the city rejected it. And so until March 2016 it stood only 100 meters away from its place of origin on the northern edge of the old town. The monument had to be removed for the first time due to the construction of a new light rail line. After the completion of the new square on Friedrichring, the victory monument will be re-erected at its original location, in front of the former Karlskaserne.

It used to be an ugly place that was used entirely by cars.
Today (2019) with the name Europaplatz again a beautiful conclusion of the old town of Freiburg. With a tram stop that has received a great roofing.
In the course of the redesign, the victory monument was also moved back to the old place on the axis of the main street of the old town.

The Victory Monument in Freiburg im Breisgau is a monument commemorating Germany's victory in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. It was built on the northern edge of the old town in front of the then Karlskaserne and after the Second World War about 100 m to the west. In the course of the new construction of the city railway line "Rotteckring" it was put back in autumn 2017 back to its old place. The Victory Monument is now a listed building. With Victory Monument, the population also associates the traffic junction, and the tram and bus stops there have this name. Officially, the square, which after 1877 was called "Wilhelm Square" or "Kaiser Wilhelm Square" and was unnamed for many years, has been bearing the name Europaplatz since 2018.
