Many Freiburgers today are familiar with the name of Kanonenplatz, having spent their free time on the mountain as a child, but know very little about this historic place, because the name "Kanonenplatz" is not far-fetched. The cannon square is located on the site of the former Vauban fortifications. It was Hermann von Greiffenegg, the then Upper Austrian government president in Freiburg, who built a late baroque villa on the Schlossberg in 1805 and called it Greiffeneggschlössle. Shortly afterwards came the cannon area above the castle on the mountain.
The former Burghalden Castle, which was once built by the people of Zähringen, stood above the Kanonenplatz on the Schlossbergnase. For the city's anniversary in 1820, this elevation was named Ludwigshöhe, after the then Grand Duke.
The cannon area is not equipped with cannons, but rather with telescopes to enjoy the view, which is truly breathtaking.
The view sweeps over the city with the cathedral almost within reach and, on a clear day, extends over the Rhine valley to the Vosges in France.

Great view of Freiburg, the old town and the cathedral. In good weather and if you look closely, you can even see the St. Stephansmünster in Breisach from up here.
