Renovations are always going on here! Not surprising for a 900-year-old building (first documented in 1120). Freiburg Minster, by the way, not only boasts the "most beautiful tower in Christendom," but also set a precedent. As the only cathedral completed in the Gothic period, it has been copied countless times in parts (or the Freiburg architects later worked on larger projects – almost like in football today). Just look at Strasbourg, Cologne (the world's largest cathedral), and Ulm (the world's tallest church tower)!

The Freiburg Minster (or Münster Our Lady) is built in the Romanesque and mostly Gothic style Roman Catholic parish church of Freiburg im Breisgau. It was built from about 1200 to officially 1513. Since Freiburg has been a bishopric since 1827 (Archbishopric of Freiburg), the church is today formally a cathedral, but is traditionally called "Münster" and not "cathedral". The Münster community belongs to the pastoral care unit Freiburg middle in the deanery of Freiburg.
The well-known art historian Jacob Burckhardt said in 1869 in a lecture series on the 116 -meter-high tower in comparison with Basel and Strasbourg: And Freiburg will probably remain the most beautiful tower on earth. From this evolved probably the often heard, but not quite literal quote from the "most beautiful tower of Christendom". Art historians from around the world praise the Cathedral of Our Lady of Freiburg as an architectural masterpiece of Gothic.

A very beautiful and worth seeing place. The climb to the tower can be reached via a long and narrow wall staircase, and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view. The bellworks can also be viewed, which are also very loud at the right time.
