The Freiburg Minster (or Münster Our Lady) is built in the Romanesque and mostly Gothic style Roman Catholic parish church of Freiburg im Breisgau. It was built from about 1200 to officially 1513. Since Freiburg has been a bishopric since 1827 (Archbishopric of Freiburg), the church is today formally a cathedral, but is traditionally called "Münster" and not "cathedral". The Münster community belongs to the pastoral care unit Freiburg middle in the deanery of Freiburg.
The well-known art historian Jacob Burckhardt said in 1869 in a lecture series on the 116 -meter-high tower in comparison with Basel and Strasbourg: And Freiburg will probably remain the most beautiful tower on earth. From this evolved probably the often heard, but not quite literal quote from the "most beautiful tower of Christendom". Art historians from around the world praise the Cathedral of Our Lady of Freiburg as an architectural masterpiece of Gothic.

Freiburg Minster. Curious ... it does not belong to the Catholic Church! The owner is the city of Freiburg, together with the archbishop's ordinariate and the Catholic Foundation Council of Münsterpfarrei.
And ... the Münsterfabrikfonds is responsible for the maintenance on the outside and the Freiburg Münsterbauverein for the inside. (Wikipedia)

Renovation is always here! In a 900-year-old building (1120 first written mention) also not exactly surprising ...
Incidentally, Freiburg Minster not only has the "Most Beautiful Tower of Christendom", but was also a style-setting one. As the only cathedral, which was also completed in the Gothic, it was copied X times in parts (or the master builders from Freiburg worked later for larger projects - almost like today in football). Just take a look to Strasbourg, Cologne (largest cathedral in the world), Ulm (highest church tower in the world), ...!
