In the center of Poelkapelle you will find the Guynemer Monument, as a tribute to the French pilot Georges Guynemer. With 53 aerial combat victories he is rightly a pioneer in war aviation. On September 11, 1917, German troops shot Guynemer down over Poelkapelle. His body was never found. This memorial was unveiled in July 1923. A stork adorns the top of the monument and thus refers to the 'Escadrille des Cigognes', the unit to which Guynemer belonged.
