The old water tower is located directly on the idyllic Lindengarten and was originally part of the Wismar weir system. Wismar was expanded into one of the strongest fortresses in Europe in 1632. Nevertheless, the Danes managed to carry out a sensitive blow against the city by disconnecting the drinking water supply lines for the city and thus creating an emergency. In order to eliminate this weak point in the city's defense, it was decided in 1685 to convert the former defensive tower into a water tower.

The former defense tower at Lindengarten, together with the water gate, is one of the last remaining parts of the former defense system.
The conversion to a water tower took place as early as 1685 under the instructions of Mayor Anton Scheffel. The tower was now operated by horse power via a treadmill.
During a siege of the city of Wismar, the water tower was connected to the waterworks in the city center by wooden pipes. The water tower was functional until 1873, but then it was replaced by new technology.
