The Wasserkunst, a pavilion-like, free-standing building directly on the market square in Wismar, is considered the landmark of the Hanseatic city. The complex building was built from 1579 to 1602 according to plans by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin in the Dutch Renaissance style. The waterworks served to supply the city with drinking water until 1897.
