To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of national poet Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone took place on November 10, 1859, in front of the Royal Playhouse; the monument was inaugurated twelve years later. Reinhold Bergas designed the marble statue, standing in a fountain amidst four allegorical female figures seated on the fountain's edge, symbolizing the main areas of his work – lyric poetry, drama, philosophy, and history.
