Once you could reach a monastery gate here that still exists today with decorations on the jamb (around 1500), which is unfortunately firstly built into the hollow spaces in the casemates (under the restaurant) and secondly is not open to the public. It's a shame, but to see it you would have to abseil down. Sounds like an adventure that is unfortunately not possible. From the upper edge of the fortress wall down to the gate is just over 22 meters.

Back to the stairs. This is basically the remainder of the so-called Duke's Path on the Königstein, a late medieval access. This meandered through the rocks over a wooden bridge to a wall with the gate mentioned above.

The path was named after the Saxon Duke George the Bearded (1471-1539) from the Albertine line (Wettin).

This path led up to the "Monastery of Praise of the Miracles of Mary", which was founded in 1516 by the aforementioned Duke, who was a staunch opponent of the Reformation. As the year suggests, this was before the Königstein was expanded into a fortress.

The newly founded monastery was inhabited by a prior and twelve Celestine monks. Due to the Reformation that "started" in 1517, the monks gradually fled from the Königstein and so the monastery was closed again in 1524. All traces (apart from the few visible steps and the "invisible" gate) were removed when the Königstein was expanded into a fortress.

The location of the monastery (floor plan) can be clearly seen on one of the fortress models that can be seen in the exhibition on the Königstein.
