Königstein Fortress is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe and is perched on a table mountain in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, above the town of Königstein of the same name. With an area of 9.5 hectares and an elevation of 240 meters above the Elbe, the fortress has a long history that dates back to the Late Bronze Age, while military use began in the 11th century and developed over the centuries with numerous structural extensions, including the deepest castle well in Europe.
