In contrast to the neighboring Neurathen rock castle, little is known about the history of this complex. It was probably built together with it in the 11th century. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1289. In 1469, Altrathen was demolished together with Neurathen.

In 1888, the industrialist Eduard Seifert bought the remains of the castle and rebuilt the complex in the neo-Gothic style by 1893. Only the cellars and parts of the keep's spiral staircase remained of the medieval castle.

The privately owned Altrathen Castle was sold in 2018 to a new owner who lives in Bremen. The owner explained that in November 2018 both the public use as an inn or guesthouse and the permanent accessibility of the castle would end. The castle is to be used privately as a second home, the owner told the regional press, and the area is to be fenced off. Wikipedia

Nestled in the impressive panorama of the spa town of Rathen, the historic Altrathen Castle rises, its secrets shrouded in the mists of time. Unlike its famous neighbour, the rock castle Neurathen, Altrathen is shrouded in a veil of the unknown. Its origins are thought to date back to the 11th century, but it was not until 1289 that it was first recorded.

Lost in the turmoil of history, Altrathen saw its destruction in the 1460s. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it was given new life in the late 19th century by the industrialist Eduard Seifert. With respect for the few remnants of its medieval splendour - the cellars and parts of a spiral staircase - it was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style.

Today, owned by a privateer from Bremen, Altrathen Castle rests behind locked gates - a silent monument to the past. Its majestic view from the spa town of Rathen draws many eyes, and one cannot help but wish that one day it will open its doors to the public again. Such historical treasures should be there for all, as a reminder of times gone by and as an inspiration for future generations. While we console ourselves with the thought that its preservation is assured, we continue to hope for a return to the magnificent Altrathen Castle.

Too bad the castle is no longer open to the public. Maybe it will change again. It would be a shame if historic properties were only for wealthy owners...nevertheless nice that it's preserved.
