Velké náměstí, the Great Square, is the historical town centre of Prachatice. The builders and owners of the richly sgraffiti-decorated houses were mostly the richest members of wealthy patrician families. Until the 16th century, most of the houses belonged to salt traders on the Golden Path trade route. The demand for houses on the square led to the construction of a new row of houses on the east side of the original square in the 16th century. This reduced its area by about half, and the original houses on the east side became the western row of buildings in Křišťanova Street.

The market square in the center of Prachatice, with its many sgraffito-decorated house facades, is one of the most beautiful in Bohemia. Prachatice was the end point of the Golden Trail (coming from Passau) and became rich through the salt and malt trade. - You can see this wealth ;-)
